I am a historian of technology and author of Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City (MIT Press, 2008). My general field of research is modern technology, with a particular emphasis on streets, people, and vehicles in the early twentieth-century city. My most recent article is "Street Rivals: Jaywalking and the Invention of the Motor Age Street," Technology and Culture 48 (April 2007), 331-359. I am active in the International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility, and in the Society for the History of Technology.
