I'm currently writing my dissertation, "Entangled Ethnicities." It is a regional history of Mombasa that focuses on dynamics of community development over the past two millennia. Through participating in and conducting interviews about ethnic and religious community celebrations among the modern Swahili and Mijikenda, I am identifying strategies of affiliation which have endured from previous generations.
By writing a regional history focusing on the interactions between the coast and the hinterland, I hope to complement the transnational history of East Africa with local perspectives and initiatives.
