About

My general interests and training lie in the pre-modern history of Europe, the Mediterranean, and Latin America.

My dissertation examines religious conversion in 16th-century Spain and Mexico, focusing on language policy. In an empire of multiple cultures and languages, Catholic clerics had to find ways to communicate with a range of peoples. Specifically, I investigate the practical and intellectual justifications for using Arabic, Castilian, Latin, and Nahuatl to convey Catholic doctrine.
