Ph.D. 1994 from University of Wisconsin, Department of Communication Arts.  Adviser: John Fiske.  Dissertation: "Groove Tube and Reel Revolution: The Youth Rebellions of the 1960s and Popular Culture. 

Before coming to the University of Virginia in 2001, was assistant professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of Alberta from 1996 to 2001.

First book published by Duke University Press in 2001: Groove Tube: Sixties Television and the Youth Rebellion.

Currently completing second book: Equal Time: Television and its Audiences in the Civil Rights Era.

Main research interests include media and television history; 1960s movements for social change and popular media; women and television.
